Jewelry in Court

Thursday, January 17th, 2008

I try to avoid wearing gaudy jewelry as much as possible. Lawyers always carry around the assumption that they live rich and opulent lives. Though I live comfortably, I don’t have a great deal of money to throw away on trivial things. I bought a car and a modest two story house for my family. The only pieces of jewelry I put on are a wedding ring and a nice little gold bangle my great grandmother originally owned, as a homage to her important in my life. Other than that, I avoid any signs of wealth. I don’t want my clients thinking of me as a rich and aloof person, because I’m not!

Oh Lord

Tuesday, January 8th, 2008

Last night, I took a few of those generic sleep aid medicines, some generic Unisom. I find it amazing how this same medicine is marketed under so many names and for so many prices. The active ingredient is also present in Tylenol PM, Benadryl, Unisom, and tons of generic products. I used to avoid Benedryl when I had an allergic reaction because of the grogginess it causes. Turns out, just about all medicines containing Diphenhydramine cause the same elliptical effects.

Linda Pino Testifies

Thursday, December 20th, 2007

I recently saw the movie Sicko by Michael Moore and was shocked by the standard of health care we maintain in this country. I was especially moved by the next clip. It features a former medical reviewer, Linda Pino, who gives an emotional confession that her actions directly lead to a man’s death. Still, it took a lot of courage to do this. It also features the idea of HMO’s, hatched by none other than Nixon and his cronies.

Vacation Booking

Monday, December 10th, 2007

My job is almost like having a retail job - there are no vacations around holiday times. Sure, we get the actual holidays off, as courts are closed, but the weeks before and after Christmas are hectic. The roads are full of travelers, and sometimes we end up dealing with people from out of state and everything else. These are hectic and stressful times, so I have already prepared a vacation for February. I plan on booking a sweet Vegas hotel and getting a cheap flight aboard a budget carrier.

Coffee Mornings

Sunday, December 9th, 2007

I like to begin every morning with an energizing shot of caffeine. I am not a big coffee person, at least not the Folger’s variety. I like real coffee, like espresso. I also don’t like soda, because it is filled with sugar. In order to open my eyes early in the morning, I now prefer capresso. You may be asking what that is, well, it’s a combination of cappuccino and espresso. Baristas may be saying, “Wait, cappuccino already contains espresso.” To which I say “Be quiet.”

White House Christmas

Friday, December 7th, 2007

I wanted to go to Washington D.C. this year to witness to lighting of the national Christmas Tree. They always hand pick a huge North Carolina pine and decorate it extensively to show the holiday spirit of the government. This time of year, we can put all our differences aside for a while and just sit back and enjoy the season. If I had an invitation to the White House, I’d be able to have dinner with the President and even sit in his Bush furniture.

Soldier Arrested Seeking Help at VA

Tuesday, November 20th, 2007

Spc. Justin Faulkner had tried to tell his superior officers about mental problems he was experiencing, which went ignored. He took matters into his own hands and checked himself into a VA hospital to undergo evaluation for his difficulties. Then, in the middle of the night, he was arrested for being absent without leave from the military. In his eyes, he wasn’t trying to hide, as he was at a veteran’s hospital. This says a lot for the untold casualties of war, mental distress that doesn’t get counted among normal statistics.

Hate Crime in NYC

Wednesday, October 10th, 2007

A black professor who teaches a racial justice class at Teachers College at Columbia University came into work to a very disturbing surprise: a noose hanging on her office door. Police were all around the campus trying to find out more clues as to who could be responsible for such a despicable act. I will go out and make a prediction that this isn’t some hate issue, it’s probably a student whom she failed and said student is enacting senseless revenge with extreme racial overtones.
